SANTA APPLIQUE

This is the next collaboration between my crochet talent and my wife’s painting talent. She painted the Santa Ho-Ho-Ho round wood sign. I crocheted the Santa that was put on top.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn: green, red, white, black, peach, and gold.
D crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Glue

SANTA:
BODY:
Rw 1: With red, ch 17, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (16)
Rws 2-10: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (16)
Finish off. Weave in ends.

HANDS (MAKE 2):
Rw 1: With green, ch 4, 2 sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, 2 sc in next ch. (5)
Rws 2-4: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (5)
Rw 5: Working in the side of Rws, ch 2, dc in next Rw, (dc, slip st) in next Rw.
Finish off. Weave in ends.

ARMS (MAKE 2):
Rw 1: With white, ch 8, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (7) Change to red.
Rw 2: Ch 1, holding next sc and first sc on Rw 4 of HANDS together and working through both thicknesses, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog. (5)
Rws 3-14: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (5)
Rw 15: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (6)
Finish off leaving a long tail. Sew ARMS to BODY. Weave in ends.

HEAD:
Rd 1: With pale pink, 6 sc in magic ring. (6)
Rd 2: 2 sc in next 3 sc, change to white, 2 hdc in next 3 sc. (12) Change to pale pink.
Rd 3: (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times, change to white, (hdc in next hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) 3 times. (18) Change to pale pink.
Rd 4: (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times, change to white, (hdc in next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc) 3 times. (24) Change to pale pink.
Rd 5: sc in next 6 sc, change to white, (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) twice, sc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 3 dc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, sc in next st. (37)
Rd 6: 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc.
Finish off. Weave in ends.

EYES:
Using black, embroider the eyes on HEAD. Glue HEAD to BODY.

SANTA HAT:
Rd 1: With white, ch 2, 4 sc in second ch from hook working around ch, slip st in first sc changing to red.
Rw 2: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc. (2)
Rw 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in next sc, hdc in next sc. (2)
Rw 4: Ch 1, turn; hdc in next st, 2 sc in next sc. (3)
Rw 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in next sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next sc. (3)
Rw 6: Ch 2, turn; dc in next st, sc in next 2 sts. (3)
Rw 7: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 sc, dc in next dc. (3)
Rw 8: Ch 2, turn; 2 dc in next dc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. (5)
Rw 9: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. (7)
Rw 10: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (9) Change to white.
Rw 11: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (9)
Rw 12: Ch 1, turn; working over sc of Rw 11, sc over each sc across. (9)
Finish off. Weave in ends. Glue SANTA HAT to HEAD.
