UNICORN YOUTH BACKPACK

This is an adaptation of my Baby Yoda Youth Backpack to look like a unicorn. This was requested by a coworker for a relative’s birthday. The colors were chosen by the coworker. Every piece in this pattern that is made holding 2 strands of yarn together is marked with * *.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn: Pretty n’ pink, gold, red, yellow, orange, aqua, lavender, black.
I (All pieces using 2-strands of yarn) and H (all pieces using 1-strand of yarn) crochet hooks
Tapestry needle
1 22-inch zipper
1 14-inch zipper
Sewing thread matching zipper color
Sewing needle
2 1” Belting/Strapping (each cut in half)
2 Strap adjusters
1 set of sparkle 25mm safety eyes

*LARGE FRONT POCKET*:
Rw 1: With pretty n’ pink, ch 31, sc in second ch from hook and in each across. (30)
Rws 2-18: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (30)
Rw 19: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 26 sc, sc2tog. (28)
Rw 20: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 24 sc, sc2tog. (26)
Finish off. Weave in ends. Insert safety eyes in Rw 18 with 8 sc between eyes. Using black, embroider nostrils and mouth.

*LARGE POCKET SIDES*:
Rw 1: Attach pretty n’ pink in the side of Rw 1 of LARGE POCKET, ch 1, sc in same Rw as attachment, working in the side of Rws, sc in next 19 Rws , sc in next 26 sc of Rw 20 of POCKET, working in the side of Rws, sc in next 20 Rws, working in free loops of foundation ch, sc in next 30 ch, slip st in first sc. Rw 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 44 sc, ch 38, skip next 38 sc, sc in next 14 sc, slip st in first sc.
Rw 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 14 sc, sc in next 38 ch, sc in next 44 sc, slip st in first sc. (96)
Finish off. Sew 14-inch zipper to opening made by ch-38. Weave in ends.

*BOTTOM*:
Rw 1: With pretty n’ pink, ch 31, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across. (30)
Rws 2-12: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (30)
Finish off. Weave in ends.

*FRONT PANEL*:
Rw 1: Working through both thicknesses of BOTTOM and sc #28 of LARGE POCKET SIDES, attach pretty n’ pink, ch 1, sc in same sc as attachment, sc in next 29 sc. (30)
Rws 2-28: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (30)
Rw 29: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 26 sc, sc2tog. (28)
Rw 30: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 24 sc, sc2tog. (26)
Rw 31: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 22 sc, sc2tog. (24)

Rd 1: Working in the side of Rws of BACK, attach red in the side of Rw 1, ch 1, sc in same Rw as attachment, sc in next 32 Rws, working in sc of Rw 33, ch 5, skip next 5 sc, holding next sc on BACK and the side of Rw 2 of HANDLE together and working through thicknesses, sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 4 sc on BACK, holding next sc on BACK and the side of foundation ch of HANDLE together and working through both thicknesses, sc in next 3 sc, ch 5, skip next 5 sc, working in the side of Rws, sc in next 33 Rws.
Rw 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 33 sc, sc in next 5 ch, sc in next 10 sc, sc in next 5 ch, sc in next 33 sc. (86)
Rws 3-4: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc around. (86)
Finish off leaving a long tail. Sew 22-inch zipper to each side. Sew SIDES together. Weave in ends.

STRAPS:
Attach strap adjuster to each strap attached to BOTTOM. Feed straps that are attached to BACK through strap adjusters.

HORN:
Rd 1: With gold, 6 sc in magic ring. (6)
Rds 2-3: sc in each sc around. (6)
Rd 4: (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. (8)
Rds 5-6: sc in each sc around. (8)
Rd 7: (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. (10)
Rds 8-9: sc in each sc around. (10)
Rd 10: (sc in next 4 sc, 2 s c in next sc) around. (12)
Rds 11-12: sc in each sc around. (12)
Rd 13: (sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around. (14)

Finish off leaving a long tail. Stuff HORN firmly. Sew HORN to UNICORN YOUTH BACKPACK. Weave in ends.

HAIR CURLS (MAKE 10—2 IN RED, 2 IN YELLOW, 2 IN ORANGE, 2 IN AQUA, 2 IN LAVENDER):
Rw 1: With red, yellow, orange, aqua, or lavender, ch 21, 2 sc in second ch from hook, 2 sc in each ch across. (40)
Finish off leaving a long tail. Sew HAIR CURLS to UNICORN YOUTH BACKPACK around HORN. Weave in ends.

EYELASHES (MAKE 2):
Rw 1: With black, ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch. (2)
Rws 2-3: Ch 3, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch. (2)
Finish off leaving a long tail. Sew EYELASHES to FRONT POCKET around eyes. Weave in ends.

*EARS (MAKE 2)*:
Rw 1: With pretty n’ pink, ch 2, 2 sc in second ch from hook. (2)
Rw 2: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next 2 sc. (4)
Rw 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (4)
Rw 4: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (6)
Rw 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (6)
Rw 6: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (8)
Rw 7: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (8)
Rw 8: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (10)
Rws 9-10: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (10)
Finish off leaving a long tail. Pinch Rw 10 together and sew EARS to UNICORN YOUTH BACKPACK. Weave in ends.
