VALENTINE'S DAY TIC-TAC-TOE

My wife saw a Valentine’s Tic-Tac-Toe set at our local Walmart that consisted of pink Os and red Xs in a velvet zipper up bag that doubled as the board. She asked for a version that combined conversation hearts and colored Xs in a drawstring bag that doubled as the board. This is the pattern I came up with. B crochet hook is used to make the hearts and xs. F crochet hook is used to make the board bag.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn: Amethyst, red, perfect pink, lemon, light blue, mint green, jasmine.
B and F crochet hooks
Polyester fiberfill
Tapestry needle
10 sets of 9mm safety eyes

CONVERSATION HEARTS (MAKE 5-1 IN EACH COLOR—PERFECT PINK, MINT GREEN, LIGHT BLUE, JASMINE, AND LEMON):
Rw 1: With yarn, ch 2, 3 sc in second ch from hook. (3)
Rw 2: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. (5)
Rw 3: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (7)
Rw 4: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (9)
Rw 5: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (11)
Rw 6: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (13)
Rw 7: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (15)
Rws 8-10: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (15)
BUMP 1:
Rw 11: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 7 sc. (7)
Rw 12: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog. (5)
Rw 13: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog. (3)
Finish off. Weave in ends.
BUMP 2:
Rw 11: skip next sc on Rw 10, attach yarn in next sc, ch 1, sc in same sc as attachment, sc in next 6 sc. (7)
Rw 12: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog. (5)
Rw 13: Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next sc, sc2tog. (3)
Finish off. Weave in ends.

MESSAGE ON CONVERSATION HEARTS:

Using graph below, embroider MESSAGE on one side of CONVERSATION HEART. The MESSAGES that I did were BE MINE, LOVE, XOXO, BEAR HUG, and KISS.


FACE ON CONVERSATION HEART:
Using red, embroider the mouth on CONVERSATION HEART. Insert safety eyes.

CONVERSATION HEART EDGE:
Rd 1: Holding both CONVERSATION HEART halves with wrong side facing, attach yarn, sc evenly around outside edge with 2 sc in each corner of BUMP and 2 sc in foundation ch stuffing before closing, slip st in first sc.
Finish off. Weave in ends.

XS (MAKE 5-1 IN EACH COLOR—PERFECT PINK, LEMON, LIGHT BLUE, MINT GREEN, AND JASMINE):

CENTER (MAKE 2):
Rw 1: With yarn, ch 6, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (5)
Rws 2-5: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (5)
ARMS (MAKE 4):
Rd 1: With yarn, ch 6, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch, 3 sc in next ch working around ch, working in free loops of foundation ch, sc in next 4 ch. (11)
Rd 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next 3 sc, sc in next 4 sc. (14)
Finish off leaving a long tail. Sew 4 ARMS to CENTER. Using red, embroider the mouth on one side of Xs. Insert safety eyes. Weave in ends.
EDGE:
Rd 1: Holding both Xs together with wrong side facing, attach yarn, ch 1, sc evenly around outside edge of Xs with (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 3 times at the end of each ARM stuffing before closing.
Weave in ends.

BOARD BAG BACK:
Rw 1: With amethyst and F hook, ch 56, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 16 ch, change to red, sc in next 2 ch, change to amethyst, sc in next 17 ch, change to red, sc in next 2 sc, change to amethyst, sc in next 17 ch. (55)
Rws 2-17: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 17 sc, change to red, sc in next 2 sc, change to amethyst, sc in next 17 sc, change to red, sc in next 2 sc, change to amethyst, sc in next 17 sc. (55) Change to red after Rw 17.
Rws 18-19: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (55) Change to amethyst after Rw 19.
Rws 20-36: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 17 sc, change to red, sc in next 2 sc, change to amethyst, sc in next 17 sc, change to red, sc in next 2 sc, change to amethyst, sc in next 17 sc. (55) Change to red after Rw 36.
Rws 37-38: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across. (55) Change to amethyst after Rw 38.

FOLLOW CHART ABOVE FOR COLOR CHANGES ON THE BOARD BAG FRONT.
Rw 1: With amethyst, ch 56, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (55)
Rws 2-55: Ch 1, sc in each sc across following chart below for color changes. (55)
Finish off. Using red, embroider the same CONVERSATION HEART SAYINGS on the hearts as are on the CONVERSATION HEART pieces. Sew BOARD BAG FRONT and BOARD BAG BACK together. Weave in ends.

BOARD BAG TOP:
Rd 1: Attach amethyst in first sc of Rw 55 of BOARD BAG FRONT, ch 2, dc in same sc as attachment, (ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next sc) across BOARD BAG FRONT, ch 1, dc in first sc of BOARD BAG BACK, (ch 1, skip next sc, dc in next sc) across BOARD BAG BACK, ch 1, slip st in first dc.
Finish off. Weave in ends.

BOARD BAG CORD:
Holding amethyst and red together, ch 150. Finish off. Weave BOARD BAG CORD through Rw 1 of BOARD BAG TOP.
