KERNEL CORN (PLANTS VS ZOMBIES)

 
This was an interesting and challenging character from the game called Plants vs. Zombies.  The most difficult part of him was getting him to stand on his four leaves as legs.



MATERIALS:

Worsted weight yarn:  yellow, paddy green, black, and white.

E Crochet hook

Polyester fiberfill

Tapestry needle

Floral wire

Wooden skewers



CORN HEAD:

Rd 1:      With yellow, 7 sc in magic ring, slip st in first sc.  (7)

Rd 2:      Ch 1, (slip st, tr) in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (14)

Rd 3:      Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (14)

Rd 4:      Ch 1, [slip st in next sc, (tr, slip st) in next sc, tr in next sc, (slip st, tr) in next sc} 3 times, slip st in next sc, (tr, slip st) in next sc, slip st in first sc.  (21)

Rd 5:      Ch 1, sc in each sc around.  (21)

Rd 6:      Ch 1, [slip st in next sc, tr in next sc, (slip st, tr) in next sc] around, slip st in first sc.  (28)

Rd 7:      Ch 1, sc in each st around.  (28)

Rd 8:      Ch 1, (slip st in next st, tr in next st) around.  (28)

Rds 9-28:              Repeat Rds 5 and 6 10 times.  (28)

Rd 29:    Ch 1, sc in each sc around.  (28)

Rd 30:    Ch 1, [slip st in next st, tr2tog, slipst2tog, tr in next sc, slip st in next sc, tr2tog) around.  (21)

Rd 31:    Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (21)

Rd 32:    Ch 1, (slip st in next st, tr2tog) around.  (14)

Rd 33:    Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (14)

STUFF CORN HEAD FIRMLY.

Rd 34:    Ch 1, sc2tog around, slip st in first sc.  (7)

Finish off leaving a long tail.  Weave tail through sc of Rd 34, pull tightly, and secure.  Weave in ends.



HEAD HUSK:

Rd 1:      With paddy green, 8 sc in magic ring, slip st in first sc.  (8)

Rd 2:      Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (16)

Rd 3:      Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (16)

Rd 4:      Ch 1, (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, slip st in first sc.  (24)

Rd 5:      Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (24)

Rd 6:      Ch 1, (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, slip st in first sc.  (32)

Rds 7-13:              Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (32)

Rds 14-15:           Working in back loops only, ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (32)

Finish off leaving a long tail.



LARGE HEAD HUSK LEAF 1:

Rw 1:     Skip next 4 sc, attach paddy green in next sc, ch 1, sc in same sc as attachment, sc in next 7 sc, leaving remaining sc unworked.  (8)

Rws 2-8:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (8)

Rw 9:     Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog.  (6)

Rws 10-11:           Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (6)

Rw 12:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog.  (4)

Rws 13-14:           Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (4)

LARGE HEAD HUSK LEAVES 2-4:

Rw 1:     Attach paddy green in next unworked sc of HEAD HUSK, ch 1, sc in same sc as attachment, sc in next 7 sc.  (8)

Rws 2-8:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (8)

Rw 9:     Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog.  (6)

Rws 10-11:           Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (6)

Rw 12:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog.  (4)

Rws 13-14:           Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (4)

Rw 15:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc2tog.  (2)

Rws 16-17:           Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (2)

Rw 18;   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog.  (1)

Finish off.  Weave in ends.



MEDIUM HEAD HUSK LEAVES: Rw 1:     Working in free loops of Rd 15 lined up directly under LARGE HEAD HUSK LEAVES, attach paddy green, ch 1, sc in same sc as attachment, sc in next 7 sc.  (8)

Rws 2-4:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (8)

Rw 5:     Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog.  (6)

Rws 6-7:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (6)

Rw 8:     Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog.  (4)

Rws 9-10:             Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (4)

Rw 11:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc2tog.  (2)

Rws 12-13:           Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (2)

Rw 14:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog.  (1)

Finish off.  Weave in ends.  Repeat around Rd 15 to complete a total of 4 leaves.



SMALL HEAD HUSK LEAVES:

Rw 1:     Working in free loops of Rd 14 lined up directly under MEDIUM HEAD HUSK LEAVES, attach paddy green, ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog.  (6)

Rws 2-3:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (6)

Rw 4:     Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog.  (4)

Rws 5-6:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (4)

Rw 7:     Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc2tog.  (2)

Rws 8-9:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (2)

Rw 10:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog.  (1)

Finish off.  Weave in ends.  Repeat around Rd 14 to complete a total of 4 leaves.  Sew HEAD HUSK to CORN HEAD.  Weave in ends.



FACE:

Rw 1:     With yellow, ch 9, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across.  (8)

Rws 2-9:               Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (8)

Rw 10:   Ch 1, turn; sc2tog, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog.  (6)

Finish off leaving a long tail.  Using white and black, embroider mouth and eyes on FACE.  Sew FACE to CORN HEAD.  Weave in ends.



EYEBROWS:

Rw 1:     With yellow, ch 9, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, slip st in next 2 ch, sc in next 3 ch.

Finish off leaving a long tail.  Sew EYEBROWS to FACE.  Weave in ends.



BODY:

Rd 1:      With paddy green and with a long tail, ch 16, slip st in first ch to form ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around.  (16)

Rd 2:      sc in each sc around.  (16)

Rd 3:      (sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog) around.  (14)

Rd 4:      sc in each sc around.  (14)

Rd 5:      (sc in next 5 sc, sc2tog) around.  (12)

Rds 6-30:              sc in each sc around.  (12)

STUFF BODY FIRMLY.

Rd 31:    Working in back loops only, sc2tog around.  (6)

Finish off leaving a long tail.  Optional:  Insert a couple of wooden skewers to give BODY some stability.  Weave tail through sc of Rd 31, pull tightly and secure.  Weave in ends.



CORN HANDS (MAKE 2):

Rd 1:      With yellow, 5 sc in magic ring, slip st in first sc.  (5)

Rd 2:      Ch 1, (slip st, tr) in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (10)

Rd 3:      Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (10)

Rd 4:      Ch 1, [slip st in next sc, (tr, slip st) in next sc, tr in next sc, (slip st, tr) in next sc) twice, slip st in next sc, (tr, slip st) in next sc, slip st in first sc.  (15)

Rd 5:      Ch 1, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (15)

BEGIN STUFFING ARMS FIRMLY.  CONTINUE STUFFING ARMS FIRMLY AS YOU GO ALONG.

Rds 4-18:              sc in each sc around.  (8)

Finish off leaving a long tail.  Sew foundation ch to Rd 2 of HAND HUSKS.  Insert floral wire through BODY.  Slip ARMS over floral wire and sew to BODY.  Weave in ends.
