FLIP-OPEN MITTENS

This is an adaptation of my Fingerless Gloves to have a flip-open mitten top.  The mittens can be made in any color.  The set that is in the picture was a request from a co-worker.

MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn
H crochet hook
Tapestry needle

GLOVES (MAKE 2):
CUFF:
Rw 1: Ch 9, sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across.  (8)
Rws 2-30: Ch 1, turn; working in back loops only, sc in each sc across.  (8)
Rw 31: Ch 1, turn; aligning sts of Row 1 and 30 and working through both thicknesses, sc in each st across to seam CUFF.  (8)  Do not fasten off

HAND:
WORK NOW PROGRESSES IN JOINED ROUNDS TO THUMB OPENING.
Rd 32: Ch 1, rotate piece to work along row ends of CUFF, sc in each row, join with slip st in first sc.  (31)
Rds 33-36: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc around, join.  (31)
WORK NOW PROGRESSES IN TURNED ROWS TO CREATE THUMB OPENING.
Rd 37: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 30 sc, leaving last st unworked.  (30)
Rds 38-45: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across.  (30)
WORK NOW PROGRESSES IN JOINED ROUNDS TO TOP OF HAND.
Rd 46: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 30 sc, ch 2, slip st in first sc.  (32)
Rd 47: Ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 chs, sc in next 30 sc, join.  (32)
Rds 48-53: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc across, join.  (32)
Finish off.  Weave in ends.

EDGING:
Rd 1: With RS facing, join yarn with sc in any row end of CUFF, sc in each remaining row end around CUFF, join with slip st in first sc.

THUMB:
Rd 1: With RS facing, join yarn, with sc in unworked sc of Rd 37 of Hand, working in row ends, work 21 sc evenly spaced around THUMB opening.  (22)
Rd 2: Ch 2, dc in next sc, dc in next 2 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, slip st in next 8 sc, sc in next 2 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, dc in next 3 sc, join with slip st in first dc.  (22)
Rd 3: Ch 1, sc in next 8 sts, slip st in next 7 sts, sc in next 7 sts, join with slip st in first sc.  (22)
Rd 4: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 18 sts, sc2tog.  (20)
Finish off.  Weave in ends.

MITTEN TOP (MAKE 2):
Rd 1: 8 sc in magic ring, slip st in first sc.  (8)
Rd 2: Ch 1, turn; 2 sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.  (16)
Rd 3: Ch 1, turn; (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, slip st in first sc.  (24)
Rd 4: Ch 1, turn; (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around, slip st in first sc.  (32)
Rd 5: Ch 1, turn; (sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) aorund, slip st in first sc.  (40)
Rd 6: Ch 1, turn; (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) aorund, slip st in first sc.  (48)
Rds 7-17: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc aorund, slip st in first sc.  (48)
Finish off leaving a long tail.  Sew MITTEN TOP to MITTENS.  Weave in ends.
